Holobolos, Manuel
   Poet; orator; panegyrist; victim of Michael VIII Palaiologos's (q.v.) reign of terror against those who opposed the union of the churches at the Council of Lyons (qq.v.). The works of Holobolos include a panegyric to Michael VIII, and poems to various members of the imperial court and high church officials. Despite the praise, Michael VIII flogged and exiled Holobolos for his anti-unionist sentiments. Only after Michael VIII's death was he able to return to Constantinople (q.v.), where he resumed his career under Andronikos II (q.v.). In an increasingly different political climate he also resumed his anti-unionist agitation. In 1285 he had the satisfaction of participating at the Council of Blachernae (q.v.), which condemned the union of the churches. He died around 1310.
